Mince pies

Malta offers a lot to visitors and locals—especially when it comes to food. With a unique blend of Mediterranean and British influences, Maltese cuisine is shaped by the country’s rich history, strategic geography, and many cultures that have settled on the island.

Enjoying Maltese delicacies is something you can do all year round, but there’s something about the festive season that brings out the sweet tooth in many. So whether you’re visiting the island during this festive period or want to add a bit of Maltese flair to your Christmas this year, why not try one of the following Maltese festive treats?

  1. Mince pies

Mince pies are a Christmas staple for many Maltese households around this time of the year. These sweet treats are made with various dried fruits, spices, and shortcrust pastry and can be found in most bakeries and cafes around the island. The only problem with mince pies? Well, it’s trying to eat only a few of them!

  1. Mulled wine

Is Christmas complete without a glass of mulled wine? Popular in the colder months, this heated and spiced wine is usually heated with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and other spices, is served hot, and tastes and smells just like Christmas! You’ll find mulled wine available in most cafes and bars around the island, but you’re also likely to find a stand or two offering this festive treat in any Christmas market in Malta, which makes for the perfect outdoor activity

  1. Christmas log

For many Maltese households, the festive period is synonymous with the island’s favourite Christmas treat—the Christmas log. Although there are many variants of this dessert around Europe, the typical Maltese Christmas log is made with crushed biscuits, dried cherries, nuts, and liqueur. These ingredients are then mixed with a dose of condensed milk and made in the shape of a log. It’s then coated with melted chocolate and decorated to add to its festive look. The log is then refrigerated overnight and ready to be served and enjoyed the following day.

  1. Imbuljuta tal-Qastan

Trying imbuljuta tal-qastan is a must when you’re in Malta this Christmas! This warm drink mainly made with chestnuts and a lovely concoction of ingredients, including cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange zest, is typically served on Christmas Eve. Still, locals like to enjoy this throughout the entire holiday season! Like a dense hot chocolate, this drink can be enjoyed on its own to warm you up during these winter days or to accompany one of the many sweet desserts the Maltese cuisine offers.
