Visiting Malta in November 2026: A Local’s Guide to the Quiet Season
Visiting Malta in November means mild days, quiet streets and a sea that most northern Europeans would still call warm. The summer crowds have gone, the Christmas season is still a few weeks off, and the islands settle into a slower rhythm that suits sightseeing far better than August ever does.
This guide covers what the weather is really like, what’s on in November 2026, how to plan around the odd wet day, and where to base yourself in Gżira and Sliema.
The Weather When Visiting Malta in November
Expect daytime highs of around 20°C, dropping to the mid-teens in the evening. The month’s average air temperature sits at roughly 17°C to 18°C, and you’ll still see around six hours of sunshine a day. Early November often feels like an extended summer, while the second half turns cooler and more changeable.
November is one of Malta’s wetter months, but rain usually arrives in short, heavy showers rather than grey all-day drizzle. Pack a light jacket, jeans and a compact umbrella, and check the forecast each morning before deciding between a coastal walk and a museum.
The sea holds its heat well, averaging around 21°C to 22°C. Locals mostly stop swimming by now, but on a calm, sunny day a dip off the rocks along the Sliema front is still very doable.
What’s On in Malta in November 2026
The month opens with the tail end of the Battle of Malta poker festival in St Julian’s, which runs until 4 November. The same day, the Malta Book Festival 2026 opens at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali for five days, with free entry and Ian Rankin as its headline guest.
Towards the end of the month, Valletta switches on its Christmas lights and its big tree in Freedom Square, traditionally on 25 November, to launch the city’s Christmas in the Capital programme. If your trip runs into late November, our local guide to Christmas in Malta 2026 covers everything that follows.
Sightseeing Without the Crowds
Cooler temperatures make November ideal for the places that are hard work in summer heat. Walk Valletta’s grid of streets from City Gate down to Fort St Elmo, then step inside St John’s Co-Cathedral without the queues. Valletta View Apartments sits on the Strand around five minutes’ walk from the Sliema ferry, so the capital is a short crossing away whenever the sun comes out.
Further afield, the temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra on the south coast, the silent streets of Mdina, and the clifftop walk at Dingli are all at their best in mild weather. For a full day out, take the ferry from Ċirkewwa or the fast ferry from Valletta to Gozo.

Plans for a Rainy Day
When a shower rolls in, Valletta’s museums are the obvious answer. The National Museum of Archaeology on Republic Street holds finds from the temples you may have visited the day before, MUŻA covers Maltese art across the centuries, and Casa Rocca Piccola offers a guided look inside a noble family’s palazzo that’s still lived in today.
Or stay in and make the most of it. Bayview Hotel & Spa in Gżira is the only property in our portfolio with an indoor pool, alongside a sauna, jacuzzi and the Sea Salt Spa, so a wet afternoon can become the most relaxing part of the trip.
Eating Well in November
Cooler evenings bring out Malta’s heartier cooking. Look for stuffat tal-fenek (slow-cooked rabbit), kusksu (a broad bean and pasta soup) and minestra, the thick Maltese vegetable soup. Our round-up of traditional Maltese dishes to try tells you what to order.
On a longer stay, cooking for yourself is half the fun. Blubay Apartments has a kitchen or kitchenette in every unit, so you can pick up local bread, ġbejniet (small sheep’s cheeses) and seasonal vegetables and eat in on the evenings the weather turns.
Where to Stay When Visiting Malta in November
Bayview Hotel & Spa is the pick if weather-proofing matters, with its indoor pool, sauna and spa on site. Valletta View Apartments suits longer off-season stays, with sea views toward the capital, quick ferry access and inland apartments that include a full kitchen and washing machine. Blubay Apartments is the only property in our portfolio that welcomes pets, and November’s cooler days are perfect for long walks along the Strand with your dog. Alavits Hotel offers a Junior Suite with a private terrace for soaking up the sunny spells. And at Azur Hotel, the on-site bar and restaurant mean a stormy evening never has to involve a dash through the rain.
