St. Paul's Catacombs - Best Day Trips in Malta - STHotels

It’s easy to get around Malta if you get accommodation in Sliema or Gżira, but that doesn’t mean you have to take the same paths as everyone else. These day trips take you to places that aren’t as well-known, such quiet towns, hikes along the ocean, and pleasant swimming locations.

If you want to see the island a bit differently, start here.

Rabat: Catacombs, Cafés, and a Slower Pace

Most people go straight to Mdina, but Rabat is equally worth your time. It has a lot of charm, is quieter, and feels more lived in. Take a walk through its narrow alleyways, see St. Paul’s Catacombs, and stop at the Domus Romana to witness Roman ruins and old mosaics.

You may relax and get some food at the town plaza. Get some fresh pastizzi from Serkin (Crystal Palace) and eat them in the shade of the trees.

If you do want to see Mdina, just avoid peak times.

A peaceful getaway in Buskett and Dingli

Want something slower and greener? Buskett Gardens is a peaceful place to wander or have a picnic. There are cypress trees, citrus groves, and plants that change with the seasons. It’s a wonderful change from the busy seaside districts of Malta.

Close by, the cliffs at Dingli offer wide open views and a refreshing sea breeze. There’s a tiny chapel on the edge and a simple café nearby, perfect for a drink while you take in the view. This trip is more about space and quiet than ticking off landmarks.

Comino (Santa Marija Bay): A Calmer Way to Visit The Island

Skip the crowds at the Blue Lagoon and head to Santa Marija Bay instead. It’s still got the same clear, shallow water, but with fewer boats and more room to breathe. Pack food, water, and a towel, and make a day of it.

You can also walk across the island to visit the old Comino Tower or explore the rocky inland paths. It’s dry and open, with sweeping views of the sea. There aren’t many services here, which is exactly why it’s worth visiting.

Mosta and Wied il-Għasel: A Mix of Landmarks and Nature

Mosta is best known for its dome, which dominates the skyline. Step inside to see the massive interior and learn about the bomb that fell through during WWII but never exploded.

Just behind the town, Wied il-Għasel offers a completely different setting, a shaded valley with walking trails, wild plants, and caves tucked into the rock. It’s a quiet break from the traffic and a chance to see a side of Malta many visitors miss.

Mġarr to Ġnejna Bay: A Countryside Walk with a Swim at The End

Start your day in Mġarr with a hearty lunch, this rural town is especially known for traditional rabbit dishes. From there, follow the road or footpath through terraced fields and open countryside until you reach Ġnejna Bay.

The beach here is more relaxed than others around the island. It’s a favourite with locals and has golden sand and clear, gentle water.

Bonus: Ta’ Ħaġrat (if you’re already in Mġarr)

If you’re visiting Mġarr, you might want to add a quick stop at Ta’ Ħaġrat. This small prehistoric temple site is tucked away in Żebbiegħ and often missed by tourists. It’s simple and peaceful, offering a glimpse into Malta’s ancient past.

It won’t take long to visit, but it adds depth to your countryside day. Just check opening times in advance, as it’s not always open to walk-ins.

Għargħur and the Victoria Lines: A Quiet Trail With Big Views

If you enjoy walking and don’t mind getting a bit off the beaten path, the stretch of the Victoria Lines near Għargħur is worth your time. These 19th-century walls once formed part of a defence line across Malta and now make for a quiet country walk.

Start in the village and follow the unmarked trail past limestone cliffs and open fields. It’s not a difficult walk, but there’s little shade or signage, so bring water, sun protection, and a map. The views make it worthwhile.

The Bottom Line

You don’t have to go far from Sliema or Gżira to find a quieter, more local side of Malta. These day trips take you beyond the usual sights, into valleys, fishing villages, countryside paths, and calm bays where life moves at a slower pace.

Some are perfect for a walk and a picnic, others for swimming or visiting hidden temples. You’ll get a mix of open views, shaded trails, and small-town charm, all within easy reach of your base.
