The Best Beaches to Visit in Malta This Summer - ST Hotels Blog

With sunny skies most of the year and some of the clearest waters in Europe, Malta is the perfect place for a beach holiday. Whether you prefer soft sandy bays or quiet rocky coves, here are some of the best beaches to visit this summer.

Best Sandy Beaches for Swimming & Sunbathing

If you’re looking for soft sand and easy access to the sea, Malta has a few great options.

  • Għadira Bay (also called Mellieħa Bay) is one of the biggest sandy beaches on the island. It’s great for families, with shallow water that’s perfect for wading. There’s even a floating water park, and you can easily combine your visit with a trip to Popeye Village nearby.
  • Ramla Bay, located in Gozo, stands out for its red sand and natural scenery. It’s also fun for water sports—many people try the inflatable sofa ride pulled by a speed boat.
  • If you prefer a quieter beach, White Tower Bay might be your spot. It’s more remote and usually less crowded, and it’s close to the Coral Lagoon, a beautiful natural cave.
  • Golden Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Malta. While it’s easy to get to and very popular, it does tend to get crowded, and the water isn’t always as clean as elsewhere. Worth seeing if you’re nearby, but there are better sandy options.

Hidden Gems and Lesser-Known Spots

If you want to skip the crowds and discover something more peaceful, Malta has a few hidden spots worth exploring.

  • Għar Lapsi is a rocky cove with incredibly clear water. It’s great for snorkelling and has a natural, rugged feel. There’s a more popular area near the road, but if you walk a bit to the left, it gets quieter.
  • Stone Beach is another peaceful option with amazing views of Valletta. There aren’t any facilities here, but the calm vibe and lovely setting make it a great spot to unwind.
  • White Tower Bay also fits into this category. While it was already mentioned above for its sand, it’s also known for being quiet and natural. Just watch out for jellyfish, some days they come close to shore.
  • Ta’ Kalanka Sea Cave is a little-known gem. You’ll find deep blue water and unique salt-covered rocks, so it’s a great spot for a calm swim if you’re happy being a bit more adventurous.

Beaches Near Sliema (Perfect for ST Hotels Guests)

If you’re staying at ST Hotels in Sliema or Gzira , you won’t have to go far for a swim.

  • Exiles Beach is just a short walk away. It’s mostly deep water, with ladders for access, and it’s a favourite among locals who want a quick dip.
  • Sliema Beach itself is simple but convenient. It’s not the most exciting, but if you want to relax close to home, especially in the evening, it works well.
  • Tigné Beach offers beautiful views of Valletta and is a great place to go early in the morning. You might also see locals cliff jumping here. It’s a great option if you want a quick swim without leaving town.

Beaches for Adventure & Activities

Some beaches offer more than just a place to relax. If you’re looking for action, try these spots.

  • St. Peter’s Pool is a natural swimming pool that’s popular for cliff diving. The water is very clear, but there aren’t any shops or facilities nearby, so bring whatever you need with you.
  • Gnejna Bay is a sandy beach where you can try water sports like kayaking and paddle boating. It’s also a good spot to start a short hike to nearby Riviera Beach.
  • The Blue Lagoon on the small island of Comino is probably the most famous spot in Malta for its blue, clear water. It’s only reachable by boat, and it gets very crowded, so go early in the morning if you can. For something extra, hike up to Saint Mary’s Tower for a great view.

The Best Beach for a Day Trip

Riviera Beach (also called Għajn Tuffieħa) is one of Malta’s most beautiful beaches and perfect for a full-day trip. The golden sand, clear sea, and dramatic cliffs make it special. There are quite a few steps down to the beach, but it’s worth it.

Parking is relatively easy, especially if you arrive earlier in the day. There are sun loungers and umbrellas available for rent, plus public restrooms and a nearby restaurant for drinks and snacks. If you’re up for a bit more walking, you can also hike over to Gnejna Bay.

The Bottom Line

Malta’s beaches offer something for everyone. Whether you prefer relaxing on soft sand, swimming in crystal-clear water, or jumping off cliffs into the sea, you’ll find a beach that suits your style.

Many of the best beaches are just a short ride from Sliema, making it easy to plan day trips while staying in the heart of the action. Book your summer break with ST Hotels and enjoy the best of both worlds: city comfort and quick access to Malta’s most beautiful coastline.
